Addressing NP-Complete Puzzles with Monte-Carlo Methods
نویسندگان
چکیده
NP-complete problems are a challenging task for researchers, who investigate tractable versions and attempt to generalise the methods used for solving them. Over the years a large set of successful standard methods have been developed. We mention A* and IDA* which have proven to be reasonably successful in solving a set of NP-complete problems, particularly single-agent games (puzzles). However, sometimes these methods do not work well. The intriguing question then is whether there are new methods that will help us out. In this paper we investigate whether Monte-Carlo Tree-Search (MCTS) is an interesting alternative. We propose a new MCTS variant, called Single-Player Monte-Carlo Tree-Search (SP-MCTS). Our domain of research is the puzzle SameGame. It turned out that our SP-MCTS program gained the highest scores so far on the standardised test set. So, SP-MCTS can be considered as a new method for addressing NP-complete puzzles successfully.

Generating Sokoban Puzzle Game Levels with Monte Carlo Tree Search
In this work, we develop a Monte Carlo Tree Search based approach to procedurally generate Sokoban puzzles. To this end, we propose heuristic metrics based on surrounding box path congestion and level tile layout to guide the search towards interesting puzzles. Our method generates puzzles through simulated game play, guaranteeing solvability in all generated puzzles. Our algorithm is efficient...
متن کاملData Driven Sokoban Puzzle Generation with Monte Carlo Tree Search
In this work, we propose a Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) based approach to procedurally generate Sokoban puzzles. Our method generates puzzles through simulated game play, guaranteeing solvability in all generated puzzles. We perform a user study to infer features that are efficient to compute and are highly correlated with expected puzzle difficulty. We combine several of these features into ...
متن کاملNonlinear Effects In Site Blocking Induced Oscillations
Higher order nonlinear effects of site blocking, which induces oscillations in the Monte Carlo simulation of CO oxidation, are outlined here. It is shown that the rate equations which include these effects exhibit a supercritical Hopf bifurcation in parameter domains where Monte Carlo simulations lead to oscillations. متن کاملTechniques for Solving Sudoku Puzzles
Solving Sudoku puzzles is one of the most popular pastimes in the world. Puzzles range in difficulty from easy to very challenging; the hardest puzzles tend to have the most empty cells. The current paper explains and compares three algorithms for solving Sudoku puzzles. Backtracking, simulated annealing, and alternating projections are generic methods for attacking combinatorial optimization p...
متن کاملSpiral Galaxies Puzzles are NP-complete
We will show that the question of whether or not a given Spiral Galaxies puzzle has a solution is NP-complete. To do so, we construct Spiral Galaxies puzzles which correspond to arbitrary Boolean circuits. A circuit will be satisfied, (that is, have a set of inputs which give the desired outputs) if and only if the corresponding puzzle has a solution. Since Satisfiability is the canonical NP-co...
